Telecom Namibia had stepped in as the main sponsor for this weekend’s Africa Indoor Hockey Cup against South Africa with a sponsorship of N$256 000.

The sponsorship was handed over to the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) who are hosting the event. Telecom Namibia has already established a firm relationship with the NHU through support over the years with the most recent sponsorship being a three-year N$600 000 deal to run the National Field and Indoor Leagues, which was signed in 2013.

“The Indoor Hockey World Cup Africa Qualifier tournament is regarded as one of the most exciting tournaments on the hockey calendar. Therefore, Telecom Namibia and tn mobile are proud to be associated with the great tradition of the Africa Indoor Cup,” said Oiva Angula, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Relations.

“As sponsors we are immensely pleased with how hockey has progressed in Namibia and the continent at large. The Namibian teams have great chances to represent us at the Indoor Hockey World Cup 2015, thus putting Namibia on the map once again,” Angula said.

Telecom Namibia Acting Head of Marketing, Calvin Muniswaswa, attended the handover of national colours to the senior men and women’s teams on Wednesday night.

The men’s side will be captained by Russel Bartlett and the women’s side by Andrea Grogli. Umpires from South Africa have been appointed by the Africa Hockey Union as well as two neutral umpires from Belgium and England.

Tashia Kalondo, Vice-President Women of the Namibia Hockey Union expressed her appreciation to Telecom Namibia/TN Mobile.

“Telecom Namibia and TN Mobile’s commitment to the game of hockey in Namibia has been extraordinary and the Namibia Hockey Union is extremely grateful and looks forward to a long, rewarding relationship going forward. For Namibia to be able to host this tournament on home soil for the first time ever will give our teams the best opportunity to qualify for the World Cup in Leipzig, Germany in 2015. We call on all Namibians to come and support this event and our national players”.

Telecom Namibia today announced that it has set up a "Telecom Namibia Juniper Networks Academy" in conjunction with XON Systems and Juniper Networks to boost the training of network engineers on its training facility.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Joel Kaapanda, officially opened the training facility this morning.

Hon. Kaapanda described the academy as “a laudable initiative of Telecom Namibia”, which is “in line with the overall policy of Government and my Ministry for capacity building and human resource development to meet the growing requirements of the industry in terms of trained personnel.”

The Telecom Namibia Juniper Networks Academy is designed to offer a conductive environment for students to foster a spirit of innovation and generate powerful new ideas through training and knowledge transfer. It will deliver a wide range of technical courses and aims to address gaps in training provision to help network engineers into sustainable employment in the ICT sector.

The first phase of the programme, launched in November last year, prepared instructors to lead training throughout the year in what is now the second phase and graduates will be trained to several internationally recognised certifications using a custom-made laboratory.

Graduates will receive internationally recognised qualifications for Juniper Networks’ Service Provider Routing and Switching Track, the Enterprise Routing and Switching Track, and the Security Track. Recognised certifications include JNCIE-SP, JNCIE-ENT and JNCIE-SEC. These will support existing studies with specialisation in engineering, software development, microelectronics, and telecommunication. Further steps may include rolling the programme into the Polytechnic of Namibia.

Frans Ndoroma, the managing director of Telecom Namibia, said, “The Telecom Namibia Juniper Network Academy is set to be one of the most advanced learning facilities in Africa and is a sign of the development that can be achieved through partnerships. The facility will play an important role in training network administrators to properly handle the installation and setting up of Juniper networking solutions.”

Ndoroma said the academy will train network engineers to look after the telecommunications networks already built and to design and develop the networks for the future to maintain the growth and stimulation of the economy.

Charl Coetzee, managing director of XON Systems, said that the Telecom Namibia Juniper Networks Academy is a key component of ensuring sustainability and expertise local to Namibia where Namibians can maintain their own infrastructure.

“Students will be trained in the laboratory which comprises the same Juniper Networks equipment employed by Telecom Namibia for its universal backhaul, core and edge networks. The results will be beneficial to the people of Namibia as well as to one of the core operations of the government’s ICT department in bringing connectivity to the people of Namibia but also core carrier services to neighbouring African countries,” Coetzee added.

Courses will take place in the Telecom Namibia Training Centre, which is situated at Hosea Kutako Avenue, Pioneerspark, Windhoek.

The academy will be run by Telecom Namibia, Juniper Networks and XON for the first year and then extended to the Polytechnic of Namibia thereafter.
